Without looking up she squeezed my hand and I could feel my hand transforming itself into a wing. I was able to soar up, to fly... I could choose any one of the four main points of the compass, but I remained where I was, I stopped above this small, painful, blessed piece of earth.

Meeting of the Kukuk board in Bad X in their "malerische' /picturesque location, above the rooftops of their beloved city. The table for the meeting had been set up outside on the patio, and it was nicely decorated with vases of roses, plates of pretzels, and drinks of apple juice and sparkling water. For once, people were coming up to me an introducing themselves (not that I had any chance of remembering their names). One spritely woman simply replied "Popp!" when I shook her hand and introduced myself. She didn't let go, so I repeated my name. Someone at my elbow added helpfully, "Das ist die Mutter von XXXX Popp." "Do we know each other?" I wondered aloud. Still no help, still the woman stared penetratingly at me... "Spielt er Fussball?" I hazarded, wondering if this was a team mum who wanted acknowlegment that our children were on the same team.
"XXXXX Popp ist der 2. Bürgermeister," I am told.
Me: I almost bought you a book in London. It was called something like, "100 Things They Don't Teach You About Capitalism."
R: Like what?
Me: Well, there was one chapter on how the United States is always quoted as having the highest quality of life in the world, but it actually doesn't, because it has a high proportion of vastly wealthy people which skew the averaged wealth per person.
R: You already knew that.
Me: Yeah, sure, it was just nice that a Cambridge professor knew it, too.
R: I think we know everything already.
Me: I was so impressed with Pope Francis today. For his first overseas trip, he chose to visit a refugee camp off the coast of Italy. He threw a wreath in the water to remember the immigrants who lost their lives trying to enter Europe illegally, and he spoke of a 'Globalisierung der Gleichgültigkeit."
R: Ist mir doch egal.
